In what can only be described as an act of solidarity and unity, member states of the European Union have via the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism answered Portugals request for aid in fighting the ongoing forest fire which is threatening lives and property in the small nation
Spain Italy and France have been them first to offer support and have so far offered up at least 7 firefighting planes on request of Portugal, who activated EUCPM.Portugal activated the EUCPM earlier requesting airplanes, and have since then requested firefiters as well to reinforce the Portuguese forces currently operating in the region.
“Portugal is not alone in these difficult times. Europe is about solidarity and we have acted quickly to send concrete support since the early hours. Following France’s three firefighting planes dispatched this morning, let me now thank Italy and Spain who have also offered four additional planes through the EU’s Civil Protection Mechanism.” Said Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides.
The EUCPM facilitates emergency response and crisis aid in among 34 European states thus also including some that are not full member states of the EU.
